The Cost of Dementia
A study released today has identified that the worldwide cost of caring for individuals with dementia is over $600 billion!!! The report further predicts that the number of individuals suffering from Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia will likely triple by 2050. Interestingly, richer nations were noted to have about 46% of all dementia cases, but these same richer nations account for 89% of money spent on dementia. I was just wondering if the great increase of dementia is due to the cell phone use and the radiation that they give off (although in small amounts it still can lead to tumors in the brain), or even with the great use of plastic today over glass in past decades. It will be interesting to see the new studies associated with trying to prevent and treat dementia in the years to come.
I can believe how expensive Dementia can cost. My grandmother had dementia and I believe that my dad had to sell my grandmother's house so she could be put into a good nursing home.
ReplyDeleteI read an interesting article once where it said that Aluminum can be a cause for Alzheimer's. Al can be found in common deodorants. In the article it said that richer nations have higher cases of dementia. I wonder if richer nations use deodorant more than other countries?

The idea about the spread of Alzheimer's growing every 20 years is astounding. The problem is that we don't have an actual gene test or cure for Alzheimer's. I agree that the US needs to put some money into trying to stop Alzheimer's. But this is a genetic disease, not some bacteria that can be spread, why don't we have more genetic testing of parents before they have babies. If they know they are a carrier, they might be more cautious to have a baby when there is a good chance of their child someday having Alzheimer's. If this disease is going to cost so much money we need to put the money and effort into studies now to prevent that.
Alzheimer's disease and the increase in cost is crazy! It is hard to believe that this will happen so quickly. I think that they need to continue the clinical trials to help treat and possibly prevent this disease. I think that it will help save the US money in the long run. In the meantime, I think that the US needs to develop an Alzheimer's policy.
